In reply to Judy. Hi Judy! Yep, a candy thermometer is definitely going to help make sure you get the toffee to the right temp. Also, over stirring can cause the grainy/sugary consistency, as it causes the sugar to crystalize. Next round, try stirring it a little less as well. Hope this helps!

I made the crack candy for Christmas gifts.. my toffee seemed sugary.. I cooked it like your directions but I guess I didn’t cook it long enough.
I will try again, I purchased a candy thermometer to use on the toffee.
